Established Sept 19, 2006, Bakersfield Jazz Workshop is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to education, appreciation and promotion of jazz music in Bakersfield and Kern County, California. We engage with our community through weekly workshops, scholarships, free concerts, and other activities.
Every Tuesday, BJW holds a workshop, open to the public, consisting of a beginner jazz ensemble class, a featured artist concert, and an open jam session. Free admission. Family-friendly.
If you plan to participate in the open jam session, please read these guidelines, intended to make for a smooth, orderly and enjoyable session.
We rely on voluntary donations from attendees, businesses, venues and other community organizations. These donations may be tax-deductable (consult your tax advisor).
Workshop attendees can drop a few dollars in the tip jar. Local businesses and community organizations can make donations in person at the workshop, or by mail.

A: Yes! We offer a beginner jazz class every Tuesday at 6:30 pm. To participate you should be comfortable with your instrument, able to play major and minor scales in every key, and read music.
Q: How does the open jam session work?
A: The jam session is intended for more advanced players who want to practice improvisation, improve their sight-reading skills, and learn to collaborate on-stage with a group. Click below for some basic process and etiquette guidelines.
