Firstly, along with drummers Pete Gago, Gabe Herriot, and Craig Woods, he will perform 3 traditional rhythm sequences on the batá drums. The bata drums are a set of 3 hourglass shaped drums that are played lengthwise on the lap. Batá drums come from Nigeria via Cuba. The group will perform for the 3 male deities known as “the warriors”: Elegua, Ogun and Ochosi. Elegua is one who represents the crossroads, and is known as the trickster. Ogun is a powerful warrior who lives in the forest and is the owner of the earth. Ochosi is a brother to Ogun, a hunter who uses a bow and arrow to catch prey.
In the second portion of Robert’s presentation, he will perform some selections from work with his project called ‘GBON’ and from the band ‘Ixtli’. These compositions will be performed on solo drumset along with a pre-recorded track. They are very complicated and intense, but also allow for wide range of improvisation.
